Former NBA Player Charged in Head On Motor Vehicle Accident

Former NBA guard Daron ‘Mookie’ Blaylock was involved in a motor vehicle accident in Jonseboro, Georgia on Friday afternoon. His career spans 13 seasons, primarily as a member of the Atlanta Hawks. In 1994, he was named a member of the NBA All-Star team. Over his career, Blaylock averaged 13.5 points, 6.7 assists, and over two steals a game. Blaylock is a 46 years old.

Blaylock caused a head on collision which left himself in serious condition, and one woman dead. The accident occurred when Blaylock crossed the center line while driving his Cadillac Escalade northbound along an Atlanta highway and struck a van head on.

Blaylock as well as, the van’s driver and passenger where airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center. Blaylock sustained serious injuries as a result of the accident and was unresponsive upon arrival. He was initially placed on life support. However, he was subsequently taken off life support because his condition improved. Hospital representatives report that his condition is stable at this time.

The van’s driver suffered from a broken ankle. His 40 year old wife, who was the passenger in the van, was pronounced dead after arriving at Atlanta Medical Center.

Authorities have not yet determined what caused Blaylock to cross the center line.

At this time, it is not clear why Blaylock crossed the center line. According to a family member, Blaylock is presently being treated for seizures. Georgia State Patrol’s reconstruction team has initiated an investigation into the cause of the accident, but no findings have been released. Blaylock currently has outstanding warrants for DUI and drug charges in Spaiding County, Georiga. However, alcohol is not believed to be a factor.

Blaylock charged with two counts in connection with the accident; more serious charges may follow.

Today, Blaylock was charged with two counts as a result of the incident, for driving with a suspended license and failure to stay in his designated lane. According to a statement issued by Jonesboro, Georgia’s Chief of Police, Frank Allen, investigators intend to speak with Blaylock as soon as his condition improves, in order to determine whether more serious charges are warranted. They believe Blaylock will be able to speak with investigators within the next 24 hours.
