The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released
statistics for vehicle occupant fatalities from the years 2003-2012 and
the numbers present a rather alarming truth for residents of the state
of Georgia: our roads are some of the most dangerous in the country. Over
that 10-year period, Georgia sustained over 11,000 motor vehicle occupant
deaths, the fourth highest number in the US behind only Texas, California,
and Florida. This comes in spite of Georgia being an estimated 9th in total population as of the most recent official United States census.
Most of the accidents took place in and around Fulton County, home to Georgia’s
biggest population center of Atlanta, where the bulk of the state’s
traffic fatalities occur. Other major population centers including Savannah,
Athens, and Columbus also tend to be some of the bigger epicenters of
Why the high rates?
A number of factors have contributed to this high number of motor vehicle
occupant deaths. Impaired driving, a leading cause of deaths via motor
vehicle collisions throughout the country, is estimated to have caused
nearly 3,700 of those fatalities during this period. A survey of taken
of adults in Georgia found that 1.4% admitted to having driven a vehicle
after drinking too much within the last 30 days.
Likewise, widespread use of cell phones means distracted drivers have caused
numerous accidents, with as many as 69% of adult drivers in the United
States reportedly talking on their cell phone while driving. 31% of that
same age group admitted to reading or sending a text message or email
while driving as well.
So what does this mean for Georgia residents? With the rapid growth of
our state even in just the few short years in which this data has been
released, Atlanta continues to be one of the fastest-growing cities in
the country, meaning more crowded roads and a higher chance of injuries.
When getting in the car to go somewhere, make sure you put away all distractions
and focus on the road ahead.
