Fatal motor vehicle accident occurs at dangerous intersection even after
officials install traffic signals in an effort to make area safer for
On Friday evening, a fatal
motor vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Georgia’s Highway 365 and Howard
Road in Gainesville, Georgia. The intersection has been the site of multiple
accidents. Over a dozen motor vehicle accidents occurred there in 2012
alone. Recently, a traffic light was installed at the intersection in
order to increase safety for motorists.
Based on a preliminary accident report issued by Gainesville law enforcement
officials, last week’s motor vehicle accident took place after a
pickup truck that was traveling southbound on the highway attempted to
make a left turn onto Howard Road, where a Race Trac convenience store
is located. This put the pickup truck in the path of a tractor trailer
that was traveling northbound on the highway. The tractor trailer was
unable to stop in time to avoid a collision with the pickup truck. A third
vehicle, which was also traveling northbound, was unable to see the collision
in time to stop, due to the darkness, and struck the tractor trailer in the rear.
Both occupants of the pickup truck were killed in the motor vehicle collision.
In addition, the passenger of the third vehicle was fatally injured. Both
the driver of the third vehicle and the driver of the tractor trailer
sustained serious injuries.
It took law enforcement officers and first responders over eight hours
to clean up the accident scene. In addition to stabilizing injured parties
and recovering the bodies of those who died in the motor vehicle accident,
crews also handled a fuel spill and removed the overturned tractor trailer,
which was a refrigerated truck fully loaded with frozen chicken.
40 percent of the nearly 6 million motor vehicle accidents which occur
every year take place at or near an intersection.
According to a report issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 40 percent
of the nearly 6 million motor vehicle collisions that occur in the United
States are intersectionrelated. This is because driver activities which
occur at or nearby intersections, such as turning and crossing over, leave
room for conflicts in motorists’ understanding of what is going
on around them. Of the motor vehicle accidents which occur at or near
intersections, over 20 percent result in fatalities. This amounts to more
than 7,000 deaths a year resulting from intersection related motor vehicle
accidents. In total, motor vehicle accidents cost in excess of $96 billion annually.
